1. Register online before the appointment. Complete the required passport and document-delivery registration so the embassy can return your passport after the interview.
2. Schedule the required medical examination. The exam must be completed by an approved panel physician at Premier Bintaro Hospital.
3. Complete the pre-interview checklist. Bring the original civil documents, photocopies, financial evidence, and relationship evidence required for your visa category.
4. Check translation requirements. Documents in English or Indonesian normally do not require translation. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
5. Prepare for embassy security. Cell phones, other electronic devices, bags, luggage, liquids, and food are not permitted inside under the published Jakarta instructions.
6. Avoid nonrefundable travel arrangements. Do not resign from employment, sell property, or purchase nonrefundable tickets until the visa has been issued and your passport returned.

The Jakarta instructions state that petitioners may accompany applicants. One interpreter may also attend when the applicant is not fluent in English. Notify the Immigrant Visa Unit at JAKIV@state.gov at least one week before the interview when someone plans to accompany the applicant.

All immigrant visa applicants, regardless of age, must complete a medical examination before visa issuance. The Jakarta instructions say to schedule the examination at least 10 days before the interview because the medical report may take up to two weeks to complete.

Only an embassy-approved panel physician may perform the examination. Results from a regular personal physician or another clinic will not be accepted.

The medical examination may include a medical history review, physical exam, chest X-ray, age-based blood testing, gonorrhea testing, tuberculosis testing, and any other testing the physician considers necessary. Required vaccinations are reviewed as part of the examination.

Medical examination fees, laboratory fees, X-rays, and vaccination charges are paid directly to the medical facility. Confirm current appointment hours, physician availability, preparation instructions, and fees when scheduling.

The panel physician sends the medical results directly to the U.S. Embassy Jakarta. Medical reports are generally valid for three or six months depending on the examination results, and the visa cannot remain valid beyond the medical expiration date.

• Review names, dates, addresses, prior marriages, travel history, employment history, and major relationship milestones before the appointment.
• Answer questions truthfully, directly, and in your own words rather than memorizing a script.
• Bring only the documents and personal items needed for the appointment because the embassy restricts electronics and bags.
• If the physician or embassy gives you a sealed envelope, do not open it.
• If you receive medical X-rays, carry them with you when you first travel to the United States rather than placing them in checked luggage.
