Before the Interview

Four steps to complete before the Lima appointment

Begin early enough to correct missing documents or medical-report delays.

Step 1

Follow your visa-category instructions

K-1 and K-2 applicants use Form DS-160. CR-1 and IR-1 immigrant visa applicants use Form DS-260. Bring the correct confirmation page and follow the instructions issued for your case.

Register the appointment

Register each applicant through the official appointment service. The registration process is also used for passport delivery and for managing a missed or rescheduled immigrant visa appointment.

Complete the medical exam

Schedule the examination only with a physician approved by the U.S. Embassy. Current Lima instructions recommend completing it as soon as possible and ideally no later than 20 days before the interview.

Police, judicial, and penal record requirements

The older statement that Peru police records are not required is no longer correct.

Primary Document: Certificado Único Laboral

For immigrant visa processing, the U.S. Embassy in Lima currently requires applicants age 18 or older to present a Certificado Único Laboral (CUL). This free online certificate combines police, judicial, and penal record information.

  • Confirm that the certificate shows the applicant’s correct biographical information.
  • Scan the QR code and verify the certificate before uploading or bringing it to the interview.
  • When no record is found, each section should state “No Registra Antecedentes.”

Request a Certificado Único Laboral

When Separate Certificates Are Needed

If any part of the CUL contains an error, obtain the corresponding individual record. The Department of State lists these three alternate documents:

  • Certificado de Antecedentes Policiales
  • Certificado de Antecedentes Judiciales a Nivel Nacional
  • Certificado Judicial de Antecedentes Penales

Applicants with arrests, convictions, or incarceration history should also bring the complete court or prison records required for the case.

Police Certificates From Other Countries

K-1 applicants generally need police certificates from their present country of residence and from countries where they lived for six months or more after age 16. Immigrant visa applicants should follow the country, age, residence-period, and validity rules in the NVC and Lima instructions. Use the Department of State document guide for each country because availability and procedures differ.

Required Medical Examination

Every immigrant or K visa applicant must complete a medical examination with an embassy-approved panel physician. An examination performed by a personal doctor or an unapproved clinic is not accepted.

Confirm the physician’s current scheduling requirements before attending because additional photographs, forms, or records may be requested.

Timing, Cost, and Results

The official Lima page recommends completing the exam ideally no later than 20 days before the interview. Some reports may take 8 to 10 weeks, so schedule promptly after receiving the appointment date.

The current published base fee is S/2,000 for applicants age 15 or older and S/1,600 for applicants age 14 or younger. Vaccinations, extra testing, or follow-up services may cost more. Confirm the total directly with the physician.

Most reports are sent directly to the embassy. If the physician gives you a sealed envelope, do not open it; bring it to the interview.

RENIEC Certification Matters

Peruvian birth, marriage, divorce, and death records must follow the Lima post’s RENIEC rules. For proof of a Peruvian divorce, the Department of State states that the accepted document is a RENIEC-certified marriage certificate with an annotation showing the dissolution of the marriage.

Practical tips for the U.S. Embassy visit

Bring Only Necessary Items

Everyone must pass through security screening. Current Lima guidance says not to bring electronics, handbags, purses, backpacks, binders, or items that are not strictly necessary for the interview.

Organize the Documents

  • Keep original civil documents separate from photocopies.
  • Place financial sponsorship documents in their own section.
  • Arrange relationship evidence in a simple chronological order.
  • Be ready to provide any document listed in the appointment instructions.

Answer Clearly and Truthfully

Listen carefully, answer the question asked, and keep every answer accurate and consistent with the petition and visa application. Do not memorize a script or guess when you do not know an answer.

Do Not Make Irreversible Plans

A visa is not guaranteed until it is issued. Avoid nonrefundable travel, resigning from employment, or other irreversible commitments based only on an interview date or expected approval.

What happens after the Lima visa interview?

If the Visa Is Approved

The embassy generally keeps the passport while the visa is printed and returns it through the delivery method selected during registration. Check the visa for errors and review its expiration date before traveling.

If More Information Is Required

Follow the written instructions given by the consular officer. When the embassy asks for documents after the interview, use the specified CEAC or authorized delivery process rather than sending unrequested material.

USCIS Immigrant Fee

Most CR-1 and IR-1 visa recipients pay the USCIS immigrant fee before traveling so USCIS can produce the green card. K-1 visa holders do not pay this fee when entering on the K visa; after marriage, they apply for adjustment of status.
